Welcome!
This new web site has been updated to bring the work that I have been doing in the last four years together. I have been fortunate to have been to China for three years in a row. My new work is about what I have seen there.
Foreign places have always interested me. When I was younger it was the romance of the strange and the exotic. As the years have passed it seems to me that people don’t vary that much from place to place. The differences are architectural, dictated by geography and climate. People, universally, have more or less the same problems, putting food on the table, educating their children, minding their aging parents. China, like many other places is undergoing massive changes. Having endured the Cultural Revolution they are now doing a brisk catch-up in infrastructure, economics and global politics. Their entire culture and way of life is changing, as it is changing everywhere undoubtedly, but in China the changes are tangible and fascinating.

Painting, for me, brings that which is subconscious to the surface. Things that are floating in the back of my mind become manifested on the canvas. The things that I choose to paint are symbols and often the journey is in deciphering their meaning, which seems to happen as the work progresses. Water is a theme that is repeated whether the image is of Ireland or China. It is a theme that has followed me throughout my life. It probably comes from being a work in progress.
